On the 22nd November 2019, BINUS University received an award from the Indonesian Ministry of Finance in recognition of the university’s efforts in promoting tax inclusion, education and fiduciary responsibility. Taking place in Jakarta, the award ceremony highlighted three categories in which BINUS University has made significant contributions to raising awareness in the field of taxation namely a pilot tax inclusion project at the BINUS University West Jakarta campus, the inclusion of partner lecturers on the topic as part of the BINUS Character Building program and the BINUS Tax Centre.
For Indonesia to realise its full potential as a major global economic power, the widening of the tax base is a crucial component in order to fund much needed state infrastructure and services. Despite the country’s large and youthful population of over 250 million people, the country’s tax to GDP ration is less than 12% compared to 25-50% in neighboring and developed economies. It is estimated that just 1 million tax payers actually pay the amount of tax that they owe which has led to tax collection shortfalls year after year. A recent tax amnesty undertaken by President Jokowi has yielded results in encouraging the repatriation of funds to the country, but fiscal and financial education is the only route to finding a sustainable solution for the longer term.
This award illustrates the emphasis that BINUS University places on creating young, empowered and tax conscious leaders that will make a positive impact on the next generation. This attitude is not only evident through its various finance and accounting focused undergraduate and masters degree programs, but also as a common thread throughout the curriculum in its broad range of courses which strive to generate sought after graduates who are motivated to be part of the country’s success story.
