Two BINUS University students have developed a pesticide spraying drone called CAKRA that is set to revolutionize farming practices in Indonesia. The students, Muhammad Farhan Fakhrezi and Egbert Michael Ganadhi set out to find a solution to the ill effects suffered by farmers when spraying pesticides manually as well as to increase the accuracy in which pesticide products are distributed.
During their thesis project while completing their degrees at BINUS University, they developed the CAKRA framework and prototype which operates with a GPS module. The GPS capabilities of the drone enable it to be programmed to accurately pinpoint the location that requires pesticide treatment and to then check that the area has been sufficiently sprayed for complete coverage before returning to its base location. This improved accuracy serves to enhance agricultural output while the remote delivery through use of the drone means that farmers are not exposed to any harmful chemicals that can create severe side effects including early death.
Farhan and Egbert exemplify the vision and values that BINUS University instils in its students; to think entrepreneurially and make a positive contribution to Indonesia’s future. The CAKRA holds great potential to significantly advance Indonesian agriculture while also improving the livelihood and quality of life of Indonesian farmers.
