On Tuesday 17th December 2019, BINUS University will present a lecture on the topic of ‘Remote Sensing’ by Prof. Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo, Professor at the Center for Environmental Remote Sensing, Chiba University, Japan. The event presents the opportunity to learn more about this highly topical field of research in relation to radar and mobile satellite communications, aircraft sensors and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as well as to delve deeper into the work of a celebrated academician with over 120 patents to his name, who is also a proud member of the Indonesian diaspora.
Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo was born in Indonesia in 1970 at Sulaiman Special Force Airbase, Indonesian National Air Force, Bandung due to his father’s role in the Indonesian National Airforce. His interest in the field was thus sparked at an early age and he subsequently undertook his Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng). and Master of Engineering (M.Eng) degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Kanazawa University, Japan which he received in 1995 and 1997 respectively. In 2002 he received a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree in Artificial System Sciences (Applied Radio Wave and Radar Systems) from Chiba University, Japan and his current role is as Head of Department of Environmental Remote Sensing and Head of Division of Earth Environmental Sciences, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Chiba University.
Despite pursuing his education and career overseas, Prof. Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo remained committed to dedicating his career to the advancement of Indonesia in the field of radar monitoring and communications. In 1997, while serving as a researcher at the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), Jakarta, he began working on producing his own radar that could be produced in Indonesia. Despite the lack of support at the time as a result of the Asian Financial Crisis, he persevered with his dream and was eventually successful. One of the radars that he subsequently developed was mounted on a CN 235 MPA aircraft and another radar was mounted on a Boeing 737-200 aircraft that was used by the TN-AU V Squadron. He also developed a special drone to carry the radar; this unmanned fixed wing aircraft is the largest of its kind in Asia. These unmanned aircraft serve as satellites and can also be used for observing illegal fishing operations or ships entering Indonesia illegally and thus monitors Indonesia's borders thus making a significant contribution to the country’s ongoing security and development. Furthermore, he founded the Pandhito Panji Foundation which provides full scholarships for Indonesian children from elementary school up to master’s degree so as to support the advancement of Indonesian education and research.
Prof. Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo holds 120 patents and 500 inventions in some 118 countries. His various radar and satellite technologies are used in Japan, South Korea and other countries around the world. He is also the youngest serving professor at Chiba University, Japan and a highly respected researcher with papers published in numerous peer reviewed international journals.
This insightful lecture will take place on the 17th December 2019 from 1.30-3.30pm at the BINUS University Anggrek Campus Exhibition Hall. BINUS University students as well as media representatives are encouraged to register their interest for attendance at the event.
