BINUS UNIVERSITY student, Mr Kevin Kumala, established the company Avani which produces bioplastics or eco-friendly plastic bags in support of the university's environmental sustainability programmes. Mr Kevin Kumala is one of the university’s growing number of social entrepreneurs who seeks to push for a modern-day industrial revolution utilising cutting-edge methods encompassing artificial intelligence, modern device, algorithm, and big data. This measure is further implemented in order to create products that will be beneficial to future generations; among the objectives include supporting computational thinking, cognitive load management, and intercultural competency. In keeping with this mission, Mr Kevin Kumala has, therefore, created bioplastics which utilises cassava, sugar cane, and corn as its base materials. Avani was founded in order to serve as an answer to Indonesia’s problem with waste management hence the company is prepared to undertake community engagement initiatives in order to raise public awareness about its environmentally-friendly plastic bag alternatives.
As a longstanding university which supports the principles of innovation and creativity, BINUS UNIVERSITY has thus become well-known for its talented graduates. This industry standing is illustrated through Mr Kevin Kumala’s Avani company which has the capability to manufacture shopping bags, poly bags, raincoats, and bed sheets that are derived from ingredients that are unharmful to the environment. Currently, Avani’s bioplastic product range are recyclable in addition to being safe for consumption and offered at a cost-competitive rate. Furthermore, the company is slated to redefine the 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) concept by introducing a new concept of “replace” given the importance for individuals to offer solutions amidst greater technological advancements and a rising demand for socially responsible measures. As such, taking his background in the field of management and biology, Mr Kevin Kumala – through Avani – is looking to become an industry pioneer with the capacity to make a significant impact to Indonesian society. In utilising its expertise in higher education learning, BINUS UNIVERSITY continuous to demonstrate its upper-hand in nurturing globally-minded local talents to become the next generation of industry leaders.
