As an institution of higher education dedicated to the mission of equipping its graduates with the tools and experiences to become globally-competitive leaders in academia as well as industry, BINUS UNIVERSITY in mid-May 2016 hosted its latest event organised to provide current students with greater international exposure. From 10th to 17th May 2016, the university cooperated with Coventry University from the United Kingdom to host Game Jam – a one-week programme in which 18 students (nine from each university) were provided with the opportunity to test their skills as budding game developers by actively carrying out the game creation process encompassing planning, designing and realisation in the form of a prototype.
To encourage collaboration between students from BINUS and Coventry, teams for the Game Jam programme were formed so that each group of three was comprised of individuals from both universities. As a means of preparing participants for the nuances of the game development industry, each team member was required to take upon a specific role in undertaking the project, namely as a game designer, artist or programmer. Following the completion of the prototypes, each game was reviewed by a panel of lecturers from BINUS UNIVERSITY and Coventry University, provided with feedback and subsequently judged on a number of factors such as aesthetics and programming quality. Of particular merit was 'Rock & Draw', the team awarded first place for its success in creating an engaging multiplayer game over the course of the short time frame.
Beyond providing participants with the chance to further their game development skills, Game Jam also sought to offer an immersive experience for students visiting Indonesia from Coventry University. In addition to the aforementioned project, programme participants also toured cultural heritage sites across Jakarta and engaged in traditional arts and crafts in Bogor. In this regard, BINUS UNIVERSITY hopes to play an active role in showcasing Indonesia as a vibrant destination for students as well as ensure its continued success in working closely with esteemed international partners.
