On the 31st October 2019, BINUS University launched the Korean Corner Learning and Knowledge Centre at its Anggrek Campus. The opening event was attended by Mr. Jeon Jo-Young, Minister of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Indonesia, Mr. Chun Young-Poung – Director of the Korean Cultural Center Indonesia, Mr. Bae Sung Won – Director of Korea Foundation, Jakarta office and (Ms.) Diah Wihardini – Director of BINUS Global.
The idea behind the Korean Corner is to introduce South Korea and Korean culture to students and staff at Indonesian universities and libraries. The Korean Corner at BINUS University is separated into two main sections following the basic concept of a Hanok (Korean Traditional House). The Info Zone is an open space resembling a yard. This section is equipped with various books and audiovisual materials about the Korean language, culture, travel, and education. The Media Room is equipped with a 55-inch TVs, DVD player, and headsets that allow the visitors to watch the Korean movies and hold mini-conferences.
The opening of the Korea Corner marks the culmination of the project which was initiated in May 2019 when Mr. Kim Chang-Boem as the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea visited BINUS to deliver a lecture about the Korea-Indonesia bilateral relations. For the Opening Ceremony, Professor Kim Eun-Gi from the Korean University delivered a special lecture on the Korean Culture and the Korean Wave. The Korean Corner will therefore serve as a permanent fixture in encouraging cultural exchange between the two countries.
To date, BINUS University collaborates with 24 university partners from Korea and sends over 100 Indonesian students to Korea as well as hosting around 50 visiting students from the country. BINUS UNIVERSITY also receives a growing number of full degree students from Korea. Furthermore, the Korean Student Club is active on campus and will play an important role in delivering activities at the Korean Corner.
The launching of the Korean corner adds to BINUS Universities other cultural exchange programs including the Australian, French and ASEAN Corners which are already operating across the university. Each of these provides a platform for BINUS students to learn about Indonesia’s connections with other countries, to explore their history and culture as well as understand international exchange opportunities that are made available to them through BINUS University’s extensive network of global partners.
