On 3rd May 2019, BINUS UNIVERSITY hosted the Ambassador of South Korea to Indonesia, H.E. Mr Kim Chang-Beom at its Jakarta campus. The ambassador was invited as a guest lecturer and presented to students the history and future potential of the two nation's bilateral relations, particularly in the field of education. He reiterated that greater cooperation is vital to achieving sustainable development as well as harnessing the positive and transformative power of technology to improve mankind’s well-being.
In his lecture, Mr Kim highlighted how Indonesia and South Korea’s diplomatic partnership has lasted for more than 40 years. Relations between the two nations initially developed around trade and investment in the garment and forestry sectors before expanding to advanced industries such as electronics, healthcare, security, and infrastructure. As such, with bilateral trade reaching more than $20 billion USD, some 2,000 South Korean companies are already operating in Indonesia which includes popular household brands from Samsung to LG to Hyundai.
Furthermore, there has been a growing number of South Korean students studying in Indonesian universities in addition to increased joint research activities and exchange programs. BINUS UNIVERSITY is already leading this trend and has successfully collaborated with 20 South Korean universities in diverse fields. Such collaborations, as evident from the visit of the Ambassador, are part of the university’s commitment to proposing viable solutions for a large variety of sectors in Indonesia.
