On the 27th-29th August 2019, BINUS University partnered with global leadership organisation Common Purpose for the Jakarta module of their Indo-Pacific Africa venture. Participants from the university faculty had the opportunity to meet with their peers from various countries and backgrounds who all share the common goal of wishing to be better leaders. Through meeting real leaders in cities around the world, partakers seek solutions to complex problems and enhance their skills in thought leadership and cultural intelligence.
Common Purpose runs cross-boundary leadership development programmes that enable people from different backgrounds, sectors and geographies to work together to solve complex problems in organizations and in societies. The programmes are for those seeking to lead better, inspire others, and transform and ultimately solve the problems that they face. In the process, the organisation gives participants the inspiration, skills and connections to become better leaders, both at work and in society. Founded in 1989, as a not-for-profit social enterprise, 4,000 leaders now benefit from Common Purpose’s programmes every year from over 100 countries across six continents.
The Indo Pacific Africa Venture had modules in Nairobi, Mumbai and Bangalore, Jakarta and Lagos as well as online sessions from May to September 2019. The objectives of the program focused on the concepts of Leading Beyond Authority and Cultural Intelligence within the context of the challenge of “How can we use technological innovation to improve connectivity in the Indo-Pacific region?”
Dr. Johan M Kerter was one of the participants on the program from BINUS University and recounted his positive experience of the program as having learned that “as a leader, we have to have initiative, think for other’s needs, try to have conciliation and find win-win solutions, as we work not only for money but to serve and empower others”. Furthermore, Dr. Kerter gained insight into improvements that could be made at BINUS University related to training methods and obtaining greater exposure to companies and leaders to learn directly from their experiences for the purposes of teaching.
BINUS University’s participation in the Common Goals program provides the opportunity for faculty members to gain new insights, gain a deeper understanding of their personal development goals to spark innovation. This is to the benefit of their careers, BINUS University management and Indonesia’s future generation of leaders.
