On 8th – 12th October 2016, Universitas Prasetiya Mulya held the 8th Asian British Parliamentary (ABP) Debate Championship event at its BSD Campus in Tangerang. The ABP event serves as a learning platform for enrolled university students to practice their debating skills while also seeking to encourage critical thinking on a range of topics. Universitas Prasetiya Mulya earned the prestigious honour of hosting the annual event that gathered approximately 250 university students from leading higher education institutions throughout Asia Pacific. Participating universities included Nanyang University, Nanyang Technological University, Waseda University, American University of Afghanistan, University of Macau, BINUS UNIVERSITY, and Peking University among others. Tournament Advisor & Co-Convenor of ABP 2016, Mr Andre Kua in addition to Vice Rector III of Student Affairs and Alumni Relations, Dr Rudy Handoko, M.M. opened the five-day event.
The ABP 2016 event focused on debate topics which included tourism, economy, social issues, and culture. Furthermore, the university sought to hone in on the argumentative speaking skills from its event attendees as a means of promoting character-building initiatives. During the event, Universitas Prasetiya Mulya also provided leisure activities such as historical site visits and social gatherings. In doing so, the university hoped to ready the debaters upon facing the final qualification rounds which took place on 12th October 2016; Universitas Prasetiya Mulya awarded Ms Ameera Natasha Moore and Mr Mubarat Wassey of International Islamic University Malaysia as the winners of the 8th Asian British Parliamentary Debate Championship event.
