On 15th March 2017, BNI Syariah attended the World Zakat Forum 2017 event that was joined by representatives from 16 countries in a move to strengthen the role of zakat in eradicating poverty. The event took place at Sari Pan Pacific Hotel in Jakarta in which it was opened by Indonesia’s Minister of Religious Affairs, Mr Lukman Hakim Saifuddin. Attendees at the event included zakat organisations from the United States, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, India, Bangladesh in addition to Mr Imam Teguh Saptono as President Director of BNI Syariah; Mr Bambang Sudibyo as Chairman of Indonesia’s National Zakat Board; and Mr Ahmad Juwaini as Secretary General of the World Zakat Forum.
Under the Joko Widodo administration, the government has worked towards increasing the role of Islamic banking for driving economic growth thus helping to boost BNI Syariah’s influence in the country. Within this segment, the National Zakat Board estimates that the potential of zakat in Indonesia can reach up to 217 trillion IDR or approximately 10% of the State Budget.
