On 15th February 2018, BNI Syariah launched the Bandung chapter of the Shariah Economy Journalist Community (JES) at an event held in the Courtyard Hotel in the city. The bank initiated JES in cooperation with journalists in 2010 as a means to help clarify the principles of shariah banking as well as provide updates on products and services available to BNI Syariah stakeholders. Present at the event was the Head of West Java Provincial Office of Communications and Informatics Mr Hening Widyatmoko, Indonesian News Publishers Association Executive Director Mr Asmono Wikan, in addition to BNI Syariah’s Corporate Secretary Mr Adjat Djatnika.
Themed Shariah Banking Trends 2018, the event featured a discussion panel with JES members which covered the current developments impacting the shariah banking industry in the country and globally. The journalists also showcased the large potential for the continued growth of this sector as Islamic banking assets only composed of 5% of total banking assets in Indonesia. JES will thus prove vital in helping to educate the local population (only some 8.11% of Indonesians understand the principles of Islamic banking) on the merits of shariah-compliant financial services.
Through forming strategic alliances with influential organisations, BNI Syariah has improved financial literacy amongst its stakeholders. This has resulted in the bank expanding its product portfolio and effectively penetrating the individual, corporate, and consumer markets in Indonesia; placing BNI Syariah as a leading player within this rapidly advancing sector.
