On 12th October 2017, BNI Syariah hosted a Board of Directors (BOD) Teaching event in cooperation with UISU High School in Medan, North Sumatra. The event featured BNI Syariah’s BOD members demonstrating the intricacies of Indonesia’s finance industry and its growing shariah banking sector. Themed “Introduction to Shariah Banking”, the session was held to support the Financial Inclusion Movement initiated by the Financial Services Authority which aims to provide financial literacy and education to the wider public. Present at the event was BNI Syariah’s President Director Mr Abdullah Firman Wibowo as well as Mr Aryanto Purwandi as Head of Subsidiary Management at BNI Syariah’s parent company Bank BNI.
As Indonesia’s young demographic rises in affluence, BNI Syariah understands the importance of financial literacy education in influencing attitudes and behaviours toward money management. As such, the BOD members taught students on how to evaluate loans and loan terms, opening accounts, credit building, and differentiating between needs and wants. Furthermore, BNI Syariah also made available its wide-ranging products including its Tapenas iB Hasanah savings account which is designed to encourage younger customers to start planning and saving for the future — the product also provides up to 1 billion IDR in life insurance coverage.
With a better understanding of financial literacy, Indonesian consumers will have the basic knowledge required to make sound financial decisions. This, in turn, will open new pathways to increase lending and saving rates to the most vulnerable consumers. As such, through BNI Syariah’s teaching programme, the bank hopes to inform as well as create products and services that can be easily adapted by the country's large unbanked population.
