From 5th – 20th April 2018 Sarinah hosted the Yuk Belajar di Sarinah event — an education programme aimed at building the soft skills of high school students — at its department store in Jakarta. Students were treated to classes in traditional arts and handicrafts and took part in various competitions that tested their creativity. The programme opened registration for high schools up until the 13th April 2018, and participating schools were invited by Sarinah to send representatives of 19 students and a teacher for the event.
Through the programme, students engaged in a number of activities which included painting, bead stringing, fabric weaving and batik making. Sarinah also held a video contest, developing a story for Sarinah competition, as well as a creativity contest —the company provided prizes of clothing and accessories, cash prizes, and mission trip opportunities, among many others. Present at the event was Sarinah’s Director of Trading and Property Ms Indyruwani Asikin Natanegara and President Director Mr GNP Sugiarta Yasa who stated that the programme is part of Sarinah’s efforts in highlighting the need for the country’s youth to develop the relevant skills to preserve and advance Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
In hosting this event, Sarinah reiterated its longstanding position towards supporting local community development through education. Through such initiatives, Indonesia can better showcase the quality of its traditional craftsmanship in addition to growing its prominence internationally.
