Indonesia has 95,000 km of shoreline but the fishery industry is not fully exploited yet and is still only being done on a small scale so I foresee that this industry will increase and grow significantly

Mr. Budiprawira Sunadim, President Director

The company began in textiles and in 2009 entered the fishery equipment sector. What was the background to this diversification and the current strategies in place to expand the new company?

The company began offering lace curtains using German technology and then the market preference changed towards woven curtains. We made the decision to go in our own direction rather than follow the direction of all other factories. I realised that we had to look into a new area and on a trip to Riau I saw fish cages for the fishery business and noticed that they were not aesthetic and also found out that Indonesia was not able to produce its own fishery equipment. Therefore I made the decision to create my own fish cages and we have already sold to government institutions as well as private companies throughout the country.

As the largest archipelago in the world, Indonesia has a lot to offer within the fishery industry. What is your outlook for the industry over the medium term?

I foresee a food shortage for food produced on land in the coming years so we will have to look to the sea. Overfishing is already a major problem so the only answer is marine aquaculture so this is why I made the decision to enter this sector and produce equipment for it.

Indonesia has 95,000 km of shoreline but the fishery industry is not fully exploited yet and is still only being done on a small scale so I foresee that this industry will increase and grow significantly.

The company has already reached international markets such as Singapore; what further international markets will you focus on for the future?

We have already exported our products to Singapore, Malaysia and Ghana. Africa remains a promising market for the future and we have received a lot of interest for our fish cage products such as from Uganda. Our products can suit any market as they have been designed for all weather conditions.

Now we have established an MOU with an Australian firm who are looking to double their barramundi production through the use of our fish cages.

What new products and innovations can we expect to see from the company in the future?

Our fish cages have been developed to withstand strong waves and extreme weather for years. I foresee offshore marine aquaculture as being the key area for the future and then after that I believe deep sea aquaculture will be a major trend. At the moment deep sea aquaculture is not commercially viable so we will only look into it in the future.

I have also developed a multi-section round cage which is the first in the world; such products have to be stronger and more flexible. These have been tested and proven so they are gaining global interest such as from Fiji where we were invited to do a presentation for the Ministry of Fisheries as they are looking to develop their fishery industry.

In addition to fish cages we have also created floating jetties and floating houses for fisherman using plastic moulded products. At the moment we are also developing a plastic alternative using HDPE to the traditional Indonesian fishing boat and it is unsinkable in all types of weather. This saves lives as well as saving the forests as it does not require wood.

What would be your final message to the Global Business Guide Indonesia audience?

I believe there will not be enough food available on land to sustain the population for the future so we must develop the fishery and aquaculture industry. Indonesia has a lot of opportunities in the fishery industry.

I also welcome potential investors in Indonesia’s marine and aquaculture sector to contact us as we have a lot of connections in the sector and can introduce them to our network for joint ventures for example.
