Tarumanagara University (UNTAR) on 13th March 2015 formally agreed to collaborate with the University of Malaya - an esteemed institution of higher education based in Malaysia. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the Executive Lounge of UNTAR’s Jakarta campus marks the beginning of the universities’ plan to work together in two specific academic fields: Law and Engineering. Representing UNTAR during the MoU signing ceremony was Prof. Ir. Roesdiman Soegiarso, M.Sc., Ph.D. as Rector, Dr. Ahmad Sudiro, S.H., M.H., M.M. as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Prof. Dr. Agustinus Purna Irawan, S.T., M.T. as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Johan Shamsuddin Bin Sabaruddin as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yahaya Ahmad as Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment represented the University of Malaya.

Through the MoU, UNTAR and the University of Malaya intend to collaborate in hosting seminars, conferences, symposiums as well as in conducting joint research. In the future, both parties expect to extend the mutual collaboration into other initiatives, such as student exchange and dual degree programmes. This agreement therefore opens up new opportunities for both sides to compete at a higher level on the international stage.

In speaking at the MoU signing event, Prof. Ir. Roesdiman Soegiarso said “This agreement is very strategic and supports UNTAR’s vision to increase the quality of our students and academics.  The University of Malaya will add value to the development of UNTAR in the future.” He also alluded to his university’s plan to continue to expand its portfolio of international partners in anticipation of the ASEAN Economic Community.

During his remarks, Dr. Johan Shamsuddin Bin Sabaruddin on behalf of the University of Malaya made reference to the broad scope of collaboration opportunities. “It is an honour to collaborate with Untar which is very enthusiastic in building a well-connected network. There are many potential areas for our academics to work together, especially in research fields. We hope that this collaboration is successful and produces closer ties between the two universities.”

This MoU signing with the University of Malaya follows on from UNTAR’s previous efforts to form strong relationships with several other leading universities in Malaysia, such as Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.
