Andalas University | Andalas University Signs MoU with the Ministry of Agriculture
31.10.2015

On 31st October 2015, Andalas University signed an MoU with the Ministry of Agriculture to develop a science and technology park. The initiative is part of a broader plan from the ministry to develop a total of 22 such parks in 2015. Through the facility, researchers will be able to contribute to the development of new innovations for the sector that are expected to benefit farmers and agriculture-related SMEs. Taking place in Bogor, West Java, the MoU signing was held in conjunction with a working meeting event held by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Research and Development Agency (Balitbang).

The science and technology park is planned to particularly focus on the topic of tropical wheat crop management. This is in keeping with Andalas University’s recent success in developing a wheat strain that can adapt to hot and low latitude environments. The accomplishment itself paves way to cultivating wheat in Indonesia’s tropical climate amidst an annual consumption level that has reached 30kg per capita. At present, Indonesia is entirely dependent on imported supplies.

In addition to formalising a partnership to develop an agricultural science and technology park, Vice Rector IV of Andalas University, Prof. Dr. Helmi, MSc., and parliament members, Mr Parlindungan Purba and Mr Novi Candra, also discussed a plan to extend the area of the wheat plantation located in Alahan Panjang, Solok, West Sumatra. As of 2014, the tropical wheat variety developed by Andalas University at its Centre for Technology Transfer and Development of Agricultural Regions (PATPKP) in Alahan Panjang has been released for commercialisation through a Minister of Agriculture decree.
