PPM Manajemen has been involved in management education in Indonesia since 1967. What can you tell us about the background of the institution and the current direction that PPM Manajemen is taking in Indonesia’s management education sector?

Professor Andi Ilham Said

We were established in 1967 as one of the first business schools in Indonesia. At that time the purpose of the school was to create more managers. Indonesia needed to focus on economic development and the problem was a lack of human resources. The pioneers of this institution wanted to contribute to the country by creating managers.

The focus now is on executives meaning those that know the art of leadership as well as management as Indonesia is lacking real leaders. Firstly, we want to attract executives from outside to come to PPM and recognise the institution as a place to learn and develop. Following on from this, we will then put the focus on the development of PPM as a centre of excellence.

In our teaching methods we focus on 3 pillars; self management, managing others and how to manage a business. We offer long term teaching from S1 to masters degrees and soon we will offer doctorate degrees.

We also have a lot of practical management training both externally and in-house. Coaching programs for all levels of managers, from low level up to executives on how to implement what they learn in the classes here are also provided. Many multinational companies in Indonesia have used this program for their managers.

Within PPM we can offer assessment centres for the screening of candidates for a professional role, particularly for state ministries. We do fit and proper tests to be able to shortlist candidates for these jobs.

How does the institution gear its research, courses and programs towards the needs of Indonesia’s corporate sector?

Professor Andi Ilham Said

We are very serious on research in management and have two units; one focused on academic research and one on customised research which is ordered by individual companies. It is not easy to attract the best management talents so we partner with organisations as research is expensive so we need to collaborate. The issue is that our interests and company’s interests can be very different; the company may want to know more about marketing and we are more interested in human resources for example. We have business units that focus on key areas such as pharmaceuticals and telecommunication as these are growing industries that need a lot of research in Indonesia. For other areas such as consulting and training, the majority of our customers are from state owned enterprises so they do not focus on one industry in particular. A lot of past projects have been in port management for example where we prepared the management structure for the state owned agencies in this field.

How is PPM Manajemen positioned towards external cooperation with international business schools and universities?

Professor Andi Ilham Said

We have had experience in collaboration before but the challenge is the size of the institution. We collaborated with the Asian Institute of Management in Manila, Philippines as they are a similar institution size to us; we partnered on creating case studies. We have also tried before with universities in Australia and UK but the size of these institutions was too large. As we are a management school, our focus for partnerships in the future will be with the same type of organisation as us that are also a similar size. For example, Bordeaux is a management school that we have cooperated with for three years for student exchanges of up to 3 months. Now I am really looking in Malaysia and Singapore for management institutions as I think such partnerships would be very successful.

We are also interested in management schools in India and in China. India is very strong in IT and China is very strong on retail etc. therefore we would be interested in student and faculty exchange as well as joint research and consultancy.
