DEN Indonesia | DEN Indonesia Successfully Completes Package Boiler Project for Pertamina RU II
01.03.2014

In early 2014, Dinamika Energitama Nusantara (DEN Indonesia) successfully completed the design, fabrication and installation of a new package boiler for Pertamina RU II at the client’s oil refinery in Dumai, Riau. The new boiler replaces the refinery’s outdated model, which has not been in operation over the last few years due to a crack in the steam drum and corrosion to its boiler tube. First awarded with this contract in 2012, DEN Indonesia was tasked with providing total boiler manufacturing solutions beginning with the design of a new package boiler and dual fuel burner and ending with on-site installation and testing. With the completion of the testing phase taking place at the end of 2013, the 68 tonne/hour boiler officially began commercial operation in January 2014.

Through the use of locally sourced materials needed to manufacture parts such as the steam drum and water drum, DEN’s boiler for the Dumai project abides by government regulation mandating the increased use of Indonesian content in energy projects. Moreover, the new Dumai package boiler exceeded customer expectations laid out in DEN’s Performance Guarantee over the course of a vigorous performance testing period that included a hydrostatic test performed on the boiler tube, which subjected the part to pressure levels 1.5 times greater than it was designed for; a 24 hour performance test of the boiler operating at maximum capacity; and a one week long commissioning process undertaken while the boiler ran at normal operating capacity.

As explained in an overview of the project written by DEN Indonesia’s engineers, the new package boiler successfully performed at a design steam capacity of 68 tonnes per hour, normal operating steam capacity of 60 tonnes per hour and adheres to regulations put forward by the Ministry of the Environment pertaining to carbon, sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. Furthermore, the newly installed dual fuel burner, which uses fuel in the form of oil and gas, was found to operate at a firing rate of 100% MCR and can even perform at 110% of its design load capacity.

DEN Indonesia’s effective and timely management of the Dumai boiler project is demonstrative of its integrated skill set and ability to work with Indonesia’s major players in the energy sector. The company now plans to further its collaboration with state energy body PLN to construct new steam power plants and facilitate the provision of electricity to outlying areas of the archipelago.
