On 23rd April 2017, Sarinah hosted a ‘Sunday Market’ at its flagship Thamrin store in Jakarta. In keeping with its longstanding support for small business, the market showcased a large selection of local fruits and vegetables, meat products and an assortment of culinary snacks and dishes from across the archipelago. The event thus provided local SMEs with a platform to present and trade their products to a broader consumer base.
Held in conjunction with car-free day taking place on Sundays in Jakarta, the market also included a gymnastics performance by the Indonesian Federation of Recreational Sports, live music, games, and door prizes — Sarinah cooperated with the Indonesian Entrepreneurs Association and renowned local herbal producer Sido Muncul in organising the event. By providing inexpensive essential goods, Sarinah through its Sunday Market can fulfil its aim to help the surrounding communities and further demonstrating the Sunday Market’s growing importance to assist in meeting the basic needs of these communities.
With the growth of Indonesia’s middle-class, there has been increasing awareness of the benefits of fresh horticultural consumption. In hosting the Sunday Market, Sarinah makes available new opportunities for Indonesian SMEs to demonstrate the superior quality of products from Indonesia and thus meet the demand of this segment. As such, Sarinah’s Sunday Market contributes to the government’s efforts to increase local production of horticultural products and improve distribution channels and, in the long-term, support the growth of SMEs in contributing to Indonesia’s economic development.
