On 1st October 2017, Sarinah celebrated National Batik Day at its Thamrin department store in Jakarta. This nationwide event aims to mark the anniversary of UNESCO’s recognition of batik as a ‘Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’. As a renowned retailer of Indonesian batik, the company held a vertical catwalk which featured highly-trained models descending the Sarinah building whilst showcasing the company’s batik collection.
This year’s event was organised in collaboration with the Indonesian Batik Foundation and the Student Association MAPALA, and provided guests with the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the wide variety of batik fabrics on display from different regions throughout Indonesia; the company also accommodates for young and innovative batik designers seeking to expose their talents on a national consumer level. Through Sarinah’s participation in National Batik Day, the company has demonstrated its dedication to embracing its role as the face of Indonesian crafts and artisanal products. Given the Ministry of Trade’s ongoing success to promote local products, Sarinah thus stands as a vehicle to facilitate the growth of up-and-coming Indonesian brands.
