On 16th February 2017, BNI Syariah held a seminar regarding its Wakaf Hasanah initiatives at the Gontor Darussalam University, in Ponogoro East Java. The seminar was themed “The Role of Islamic Finance for the Welfare of Society” — this is in-line with the bank’s recent launch of its Wakaf Hasanah website which strives to facilitate customers with greater convenience for their wakaf needs by enhancing the online user experience.
The seminar was attended by Director of BNI Syariah Mr Imam Teguh Saptono, Mr Langgeng Basuki SE. MM. DPJRR, as head of Transaction Management of Shariah Securities at the Ministry of Finance; Dr. Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi and Dr. Yulizar Sanrego as lecturers of Gontor Darussalam University; Dr. Irfan Syauqi Beik as Director of Cibest IPB as well as members of the Ministry of Finance and Financial Services Authority. As of January 2017, BNI Syariah has accrued more than 3.2 billion IDR from its Wakaf Hasanah arm with the funds being distributed to build hospitals, schools, health clinics and educational institutions — the bank aims to collect 50 billion IDR in wakaf funds which will be distributed by BNI Syariah’s diverse charitable organisation partners such as Yayasan Dompet Dhuafa, Yayasan Rumah Zakat, Global Wakaf, Yayasan Pesantren Al-Azhar, and Badan Wakaf Indonesia.
Furthermore, BNI Syariah took the opportunity to promote the Indonesian government’s plans to issue Retail Sukuk (SR-009) from 27th February -17th March 2017; the bank will take an active role in the programme through its appointment as an official retail selling agent of Islamic bonds. It is hoped that through the issue of Retail Sukuks, Indonesia can further broaden its sources of State Budget revenue in addition to enhancing Islamic financing development.
As BNI Syariah continues its mission to become a ‘Hasanah Lifestyle Bank’, the bank is aiming to engage local communities and investors in the growth contribution of shariah-compliant financing schemes in Indonesia. Coupled with government support, BNI Syariah stands at the forefront of a shariah banking system that is increasingly ready to accommodate individual, consumer and corporate markets.
