As part of UNSRI’s extensive portfolio of courses, the Faculty of Medicine was established as part of the university’s efforts in addressing the needs to produce adept graduates to cater to the underserved patient care demands at the rural as well as national level. The Faculty of Medicine plays an important role in maintaining the well-being of patients in Palembang and the wider region, given the need for qualified medical personnel in regions undergoing rapid economic expansion. This has resulted in the rise of the middle-income demographic and as such has led to greater demand for greater healthcare services. Moreover, with the recent introduction of Indonesia’s Universal Healthcare Programme, the demand for qualified medical personnel is expected to continue.
The Faculty of Medicine at UNSRI has more than 50 years of experience in medical education offering degrees at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, covering a diverse range of majors such as Medical Education, Dentistry, Nursing and Psychology. The faculty also offers master’s degree programmes in Biomedicine, Medical Pharmacology and Medical Parasitology among others. The Faculty of Medicine delivers specialist medical programmes in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Paediatrics as well as Anatomic Pathology among others as part of the university’s efforts to cater to the demands for specialised medical professions in Indonesia’s fast emerging healthcare industry. These latest challenges to Indonesia’s development require a faculty that has the capabilities to adapt its curricula to an educational focus on evidence-based medicine and an integrated clinical practice that enables graduates to safely and effectively apply their skills in the country’s advancing healthcare system.
The Faculty of Medicine’s approach to problem-based learning prepares students to assume a high-level of responsibility in their disciplines. With the implementation of Indonesia’s Universal Healthcare Programme, the unequal distribution of medical doctors will require specialist practitioners to fulfil this demand. In the long-term, the advancements of the country’s healthcare system will benefit businesses with healthy, productive employees and a well-managed healthcare operation. With the ability to provide well-trained health workers, graduates at UNSRI can thus help facilitate the coordination and advancement of Indonesia’s healthcare sector.
