On 22nd February 2018, Universitas Prasetiya Mulya hosted a seminar and workshop at its campus in BSD, themed, ‘Learning in the 21st Century: Teaching Millennials in Their Terms’. The event was attended by high school headmasters, teachers, lecturers and other stakeholders from Indonesia’s education sector and aimed to provide visitors with effective teaching strategies on how to adapt to the learning styles of the millennial generation. Presenting the topic was Prof Beverley Oliver from Deakin University in Australia as well as Universitas Prasetiya Mulya’s Rector Prof Djisman Simanjuntak, with the workshop being guided by experts from TCS iON India, Microsoft Indonesia and Pearson Singapore.
The seminar illustrated how traditional approaches to teaching may not address the learning preferences of the millennial student. It is thus important for educators to modify their teaching methods such as through integrating digital technology and placing a greater emphasis on experiential learning. This provides a customised and student-centred learning experience that delivers constructive feedback and nurtures creativity and innovation. As such, the curricula currently offered at Universitas Prasetiya support such strategies and showcase to students how their education can be applied to tackle real-world problems amongst various industries.
With Indonesia’s population consisting of approximately 85 million millennials, it is vital that higher education institutions such as Universitas Prasetiya Mulya can continue to provide this generation with the relevant skills and education to propel the development of new technologies and policies; resulting in long-term economic and societal gains.
